Building Waymo’s Risk and Insurance Foundation in Europe with Allianz Partners
Over years of operating a commercial rider-only service across the U.S. — serving more than half a million paid trips weekly — we have learned that bringing autonomous driving technology to new regions requires building a robust ecosystem of trusted, local partners. As we look toward our commercial expansion in Europe — beginning with our initial deployment plans in London and Munich — we are teaming up with Allianz Partners to establish the insurance, claims, and safety research foundation needed to scale across the continent.
To deliver a seamless and reliable service, building a strong operational backbone is just as critical as developing advanced autonomous driving technology. That includes establishing a comprehensive risk, insurance, and digital claims infrastructure. Backed by real-world safety data showing 16x reduction in serious injury crashes compared to human drivers in cities where we operate, this partnership reflects Waymo’s deliberate approach to responsible, scaled deployment. Through this collaboration, Allianz Partners will support Waymo fleets across Europe with:
Insurance & risk solutions: Tailored coverage and risk management for Waymo’s autonomous fleet, including fleet insurance, liability protection, and new insurance models designed for autonomous mobility.
Claims ecosystem: Digital claims handling and management.
Research & safety collaboration: Joint research initiatives with the Allianz Center for Technology, exploring high-priority tropics across crash analysis, safety modeling, and risk evaluation.
Additionally, the companies will explore potential new areas of collaboration over time, including innovative operational solutions to streamline vehicle recovery tailored for autonomous fleets.
“Autonomous mobility is one of the most significant shifts our industry will navigate in the years ahead. Waymo's technology leadership, combined with Allianz's global expertise in insurance, assistance, and vehicle safety, allows us to build a comprehensive ecosystem that gives operators and passengers confidence at every stage of the journey.” — says Tomas Kunzmann, CEO, Allianz Partners.
"As we advance our commercial rollout in Europe, building the right operational foundation is just as critical as the technology behind the Waymo Driver. Teaming up with Allianz Partners allows us to pair our proven U.S. safety record and commercial experience with world-class European risk and claims expertise, ensuring we scale reliably and responsibly from day one." — says Tilia Gode, Head of Risk & Insurance at Waymo.
Introducing autonomous ride-hailing internationally is a deliberate process. Working alongside Allianz Partners ensures we have the local expertise and operational strength needed to introduce the Waymo Driver safely, reliably, and responsibly as we grow in Europe.
